3.3.4 Frame/enclosure. The frame and handle of the fan unit shall remain sufficiently cool to
allow safe handling and removal from an operating heater without the need for gloves.
3.3.5 Temperature resistance. All components of the fan unit shall be designed and
constructed to operate on the surface of a standard Army tent heater, which is operating at full
firing rate, without damage to the fan unit components.
3.3.6 Reliability. The fan unit shall be capable of demonstrating a Mean Time Between
Essential Function Failure (MTBEFF) of at least 560 operational hours with 80% confidence. If a
motor is used to operate the fan, it shall have a minimum average life rating of 4,000 hours.
3.3.7 Safety. The fan unit shall perform in all conditions of operation in a safe manner.
3.3.7.1 Sharp edges. There shall be no sharp edges that may cause injury to users.
3.3.7.2 Moving parts. All moving parts shall be properly enclosed to prevent injury to
operators. Guards shall cover the fan area to prevent injury by accidental insertion of fingers or
foreign objects larger than 0.75 inches in diameter.
3.3.7.3 Safety label. A safety label stating "CAUTION: ROTATING FAN" shall be placed in
an easily readable location on the fan unit.
3.4. Support or ownership requirements.
3.4.1 Weight. The total weight of the fan unit shall not exceed 15 pounds. The total weight
of the transport case shall not exceed 10 pounds.
3.4.2 Handles. The fan unit and case shall be equipped with a carrying handle which is
